iPhone Texting Security Issue Update with Encouraging News
We’re still waiting to hear the reaction from the Black Hat hackers conference where two men will reveal the way to hack into any iPhone with a simple text message. But we’ve gleaned a little more information that can at least help you out if the iPhocalypse happens.
Security experts Miller and Miliner said that any iPhone users targeted by the iPhone texting attack would only get a text with a square in the message. Miller and Miliner also mentioned a second kind of attack through SMS that doesn’t take over the phone; instead it takes the iPhone off the network. This method uses a kind of denial-of-service attack by SMS.
There is a bright side to the story. MyMobiSafe founder Eric Everson said that actual attacks against iPhone users aren’t very likely because of logistics. Apparently, the hack requires an iPhone to receive 512 messages. Miller and Miliner did say these messages are basically invisible, but Everson said if any of the messages were deleted before the attack is completed, it won’t work.
So if you do notice a text message with a square in it, turn your phone off immediately. As of right now there is no clear way to fix this hack although Apple is sure to start hearing questions about it as people grow more apprehensive about such a simple hack happening to them.
